Induced polarization probe / SPR / GR (IP38)

The formations surrounding the well are subjected to an alternating square wave voltage applied through the upper and lower injection electrodes.

Description

After each injection cycle, the resulting potential difference in a section of the formations is analyzed as it decays over time. The shape of this decay curve is related to the “chargeability” of the formations.

A high load capacity indicates that the induced electro-chemical potentials can develop within the formations as a result of ion transfer between the pore fluids and the semiconductor metallic mineral grains present within the rocks.

Applications

This method is particularly suitable for mining exploration in the context of disseminated sulfide mineralization. In the hydrogeological domain, it can also provide qualitative information on the permeability of potential aquifer horizons.
